Studies suggest that three-quarters of Americans are lacking enough Vitamin D. This is a problem because insufficient Vitamin D can lead to muscle weakness and bone fractures and while many studies suggest the reason people are Vitamin D deficient is because they are staying indoors more these days, a new report claims it’s because the use of sunscreen is blocking out all the benefits we get from the sun.
“People are spending less time outside and, when they do go out, they're typically wearing sunscreen, which essentially nullifies the body's ability to produce vitamin D,” Touro University assistant professor Dr. Kim Pfotenhauer explains. “While we want people to protect themselves against skin cancer, there are healthy, moderate levels of unprotected sun exposure that can be very helpful in boosting vitamin D.”
- While this research could be troubling, considering too much sun can lead to skin cancer, the professor isn’t suggesting folks run out and get sunburn, noting, “A simple walk with arms and legs exposed is enough for most people.”
