A new study from Carnegie Mellon University finds that most people prefer a sentimental gift over superficial presents. The study broke subjects into groups of gift givers and gift receivers. Givers were asked choose between giving a friend a picture of that person’s favorite musician or a memorable framed picture with the BFF, while the receivers had to decide which gift they’d prefer.
Turns out, most givers went with the musician photo, while most receivers said they’d rather get the photo with their BFF. The researchers got similar results with romantic partners who were given the choice of either a gift card to their partner’s favorite store, or a picture of them in a personalized frame, with givers again choosing the gift card and receivers choosing the personalized gift.
As for why, results from another part of the study suggests that those who give gifts see the sentimental gift as a risky choice so instead most people go for what seems to be an obvious and more pleasing option. And if that's an iPad, they made the right move.
