Most Parents Still Want To Have Boys

posted by Suzanne And Greg In The Morning -

When you ask parents-to-be whether they want a boy or a girl, most will likely say they "don’t care as long as it’s healthy." But the truth? Deep down, most do have a preference.

A recent Gallup poll asked parents that if they could only have one kid, which would they have and most people would rather have a boy. Overall, 36% of those polled would rather add a little boy to their family, while 28% would want a girl, and 36% said they had no preference.

The results actually shouldn’t be too surprising, Gallup has held the poll 11 times since 1941, and boys were always preferred, with an average difference of about 11 points. This year’s eight-point gap is actually slightly below average.

  • When broken down by gender, 43% of men say they’d rather have a boy than a girl, while women were more indifferent, with 31% wanting boys and 30% wanting girls. It’s actually not surprising that men want boys. In fact, men’s preference for boys over girls has been about 25 points over the years, while women also prefer boys, but only by a three-point average.
