Eat These Foods To Live Longer

Genetics plays a role in how long you’ll live, but you can help add years to your life by taking care of yourself with regular exercise, plenty of sleep, stress management, and your diet. Research shows that your diet is a strong indicator of how long you’ll live, and adding these foods to your plate could help lengthen your life.

  • Fatty fish - According to a new study, the omega-3s in fatty fish like salmon and tuna can help you live a longer, healthier life. The research shows those who eat at least two servings of fish a week were less likely to suffer from chronic diseases like heart disease and cancer.
  • Nuts - Snack on them and add years to your life. Two large studiesfrom the Harvard School of Public Health found that the more often people ate nuts, the lower their risk of dying young. It’s the nutrients in nuts - like unsaturated fats, fiber, vitamin E, and so many more - that protect the heart and fight inflammation. And the research finds people who eat nuts every day were 20% less likely to die of cancer, heart disease, or respiratory disease than those who didn’t.
  • Whole grains - Several studies have linked whole grain breads, pastas and such, with greater longevity. Researchers think it could be the nutrients in bran, like fiber, B vitamins, and magnesium that help lower the mortality risk.
  • Spicy foods - Break out the hot sauce and stay healthy longer. According to one study of almost half a million men, those who ate spicy foods six or seven days a week had a 14% lower mortality risk than those who only did once a week or less.
  • Seaweed - Research shows that a natural compound in brown seaweed could have cancer-fighting effects. People in Japan have one of the highest life expectancies in the world and scientists think their diet could contribute to that. And it’s a great reason to have sushi tonight.
