Many people around the world celebrate Halloween in their own, creative ways.
Each year since 2008, hundreds of people have gathered at this time of year in the town of Kasterlee, Belgium, to race in giant, hollowed-out pumpkins. These pumpkins are carved out to create makeshift boats – while thousands of spectators cheer on as the competitors paddle across a pond.
The event was organized after local growers decided they needed to find a different use for their 900-pound pumpkins besides turning them into soup.
So the Pumpkin Regatta was born.
This year – like every year – the paddlers were exhausted and the spectators had a blast.
And after the race, the pumpkins were not eaten – but still put to good use. The seeds were scooped out and saved for next year and the pumpkin boats were thrown onto a field, where they will serve as fertilizer for next year's crop.
