Joe Firmani, the director of a non-profit group called Operation Service, says he wanted to help military families and veterans during the holidays. "We’re there. We care. We want them to know they exist and we think about them."

His organization has teamed up with a couple of locale garden centers to provide free Christmas trees for vets and active military. They started in 2010 and gave away 20 trees. This year they expect to provide 800.
