Halloween is one of the few times when you can dress in literally anything you want to, so it’s always a bummer when you see someone else wearing the same costume you are. One way to make sure that doesn’t happen? Think outside the box and make your own costume.
It’s a great way to save money and have an original costume, but if you’re short on inspo, musical artist and YouTube creator JEN Z has you covered. Known for her DIY creations, she’s sharing five DIY costumes that you still have plenty of time to make for Halloween. “DIYing is a great way to express your creativity and make something completely unique that no one else has," she says.
"You can also save money and be eco-friendly by finding items you don't already have at the thrift store or borrowing from a friend."

These are JEN Z’s easy last-minute DIY costume ideas:
- Minion - To dress up as a loveable little Minion, you’ll need a yellow shirt, a yellow hat, a pair of overalls and a pair of goggles. You can even DIY the goggles by cutting toilet paper rolls in half, hot gluing them together and tying an elastic on. And kids of all ages can pull this one off.
- Lilo from “Lilo and Stitch” - To dress up as the adorable little Hawaiian girl from the movie, you’ll need a red tank top, a green skirt and some green felt in the same shade to cut into leaf-shaped pieces to create a hula skirt, a headband and wristlets and anklets. Use hot glue or safety pins to attach the leaves to the skirt, grab a Stitch stuffed animal and you’re all set.
- Burger - Start with a beige dress or shirt and use felt to create the layers of a burger - cheese, lettuce, tomato, onion, mustard and ketchup. Attach them to the clothing with a glue gun or safety pins, if you want to be able to rewear the dress.
- Wednesday Addams - To DIY this spooky girl costume, part your hair in the middle and braid your hair into two long braids. Then find or make a long sleeved black dress with a white collar and be sure not to smile when you’re “in character” to really nail the look.
- Popcorn - JEN shares a tutorial for this DIY costume on YouTube and like the burger costume, you can create the popcorn costume by attaching felt to everyday clothing. Start with a white shirt and a red skirt or pants that you can attach strips of white felt to in order to create vertical stripes, like a popcorn bucket. Slightly crumble white paper to look like popcorn, then paint lightly with yellow to “butter” it. Attach it to the shirt with a glue gun or safety pins and you’re good to go.
