A Michigan veteran gets some help with a much-needed new roof on his home. Jeff LaChance knew the roof on his home in Commerce Township, Michigan, was getting bad, but he just didn’t have the money to get it repaired. The veteran, who served in Panama in the early 80s, had never used any of his military benefits or taken advantage of the help offered to vets, but for this project he was going to need some help. "To finally recognize the value, and reach out to those groups that can help me, it took me a lot to get there - but I finally did it,” he explains.
LaChance contacted Habitat for Humanity Oakland County and with help from Owens Corning and local roofer Schoenherr Roofing, they were able to make the necessary repairs. Schoenherr Roofing owner Ross Schoenherr says he comes from a long line of veterans, explaining, “So as a company we love veterans and this is a great opportunity to be involved in a veteran in need.”
The job is part of the Owens Corning National Roof Deployment Project, which partners with local contractors to provide new roofs to military veterans across the country for free. Mike Borelli, local sales manager for Owens Corning, says they’ve done about 350 homes for vets in the area. “We love giving back to the community - that's the greatest thing," Borelli says. And even though it was tough for LaChance to ask for help, he’s glad he did and offered his thanks to all the folk who helped him. "Schoenherr Roofing - thank you, Habitat for Humanity - thank you," LaChance says. "It's definitely taken a load off my mind."
