Joe and Gina Deich, childhood friends from New York who reconnected and fell in love in 2021, faced health challenges on both sides leading up to their wedding. First it was Gina who dealt with medical issues, and Joe remained by her side throughout her treatments. Later, the roles reversed as Joe began experiencing severe heart problems, resulting in a heart pump surgery last December.

Then their wedding day finally arrived, but on the morning of the big day, Joe was unexpectedly rushed to the emergency room after coughing up blood. Realizing that his condition was serious, the couple decided to marry immediately at the Heart Hospital of Austin. The hospital staff quickly organized a small ceremony, complete with flowers, decorations, and an officiant, with two staff members standing in as maids of honor.

After the wedding, Joe was diagnosed with a gastrointestinal bleed and remained in the hospital for several weeks. Once he was cleared for travel, the couple enjoyed a honeymoon in Texas and later took their first trip as newlyweds in North Carolina. The couple is now sharing their story to emphasize the importance of early testing and regular doctor visits. They’re also actively raising awareness for heart health by participating in the Austin Heart and Stroke Walk, an annual event that supports the American Heart Association’s heart research and lifestyle programs.
