Typewriter poet Olivia Dodd recently became an accomplice in a heartfelt surprise marriage proposal at Regent’s Park in London. Early that morning, Nic, a fan of Dodd’s poetry, sent her a message asking for her help in proposing to his girlfriend, Laura. Together, they cooked up a plan where Dodd would write a custom poem, which Nic would read out loud to Laura, leading to him popping the question. Nic provided few details about their relationship, but mostly left it to Dodd to create something special for the moment.
That afternoon, the plan was in motion. Nic and Laura approached Dodd as she was seated at her typewriter crafting poems for passersby. After a brief exchange with the couple, Dodd quickly wrote a touching poem reflecting the couple’s love and resilience. As Nic read the poem aloud, he dropped to one knee, presenting a diamond ring. Visibly shocked and emotional, Laura asks, “Are you joking?” Then, after a tearful “yes,” the park erupts in applause.
Dodd shared a video of the touching moment on her TikTok page where it quickly racked up more than 90-thousand views. After the proposal, the couple thanked Dodd and gave her hugs. Laura even suggested that the poet be a part of their wedding. Reflecting on the day, Dodd says it was a joy to try and capture the essence of the couple’s relationship in poetry, calling the opportunity “a beautiful challenge” and one of the most meaningful moments of her career.
