Over the Fourth of July weekend, Xena the cat slipped out of her harness while vacationing with her Florida family in Corolla, North Carolina.
Two months later, thanks to a quick microchip scan, she was located at a shelter – injured, skinny, and 900 miles from home. The shelter staff tracked down her owners, who made the long drive to bring her back.
“They were very excited,” said Rachael Stone, a staff member of the Currituck Animal Shelter in Barco, North Carolina. “They were in awe. They had kind of lost hope that they were going to find her.”
Xena's rescue was celebrated with a post on the animal shelter's Facebook page along with a reminder to everyone to make sure their pet's microchip information is correct and up-to-date.
