Police saved a brave dog from a house fire in Illinois, but the very good boy made sure to get his leash before going outside. Dramatic bodycam footage released by the Aurora Police Department shows officer Michael Ely busting down the front door on September 11th as fire alarms blared, and he searches room to room looking for anyone inside.
The house was empty, except for Oakley, a four-year-old American Staffordshire terrier, who was trapped behind a pet gate. Ely takes it down and tries to get the dog out of the smoke-filled house, grabbing at his collar, but Oakley bolts down the hallway, only pausing to look back and make sure the officer was following.
The pup remained calm enough to run to the kitchen, where his leash hung by the back door, then he sat patiently as Ely clipped it on, then they both safely escaped the fire. Aurora Police Chief Matt Thomas says “It’s always rewarding when we can return a family member, even a four-legged one, safely to their loved ones.” Okaley’s relieved owners say, “We are forever grateful to Mike at the Aurora Police Department for saving our sweet dog.”
