Students and staff at Buffalo Academy of Science Charter School in Buffalo, New York, recently organized a surprise wedding celebration for their principal, Brianna Lanoye. The event took place at the school just days before her planned wedding and included a student-led wedding procession, dancing, and speeches. Hundreds of students took part in the celebration and one former student even flew in to attend.

Assistant principal Courtney Champlin secretly planned the entire celebration, coordinating with current and former students and staff. Lanoye says she initially believed she was attending another school function until she was given a bridal veil and realized what was happening. She says the surprise “meant everything” to her and that she’d always wanted to celebrate with her school community.

The procession included two students from each grade level, from pre-K through fourth grade, walking Lanoye to her fiancé, Zach, who was waiting at the altar. Former students gave speeches about love during the ceremony, which Lanoye says was powerful and meaningful. A few days later, she and her fiancé held their scheduled wedding, which also took place on school grounds.
