For nearly two decades, Alice Kay Tolbert has served as a crossing guard at the intersection of Keoncrest Drive and Rose Street in Berkeley, California.

She recently called it quits – and retired from her post.

The community wanted to make sure "Miss Alice" was celebrated for her years of service, so – on her final day – people came together in a heartwarming display of appreciation.

Parents and children gathered with balloons and handmade signs to make sure Miss Alice knew the impact she had on everyone she met. Even older students, who hadn't crossed her streets for years, returned to express their gratitude and bid her farewell.

“Best crossing guard ever!” read one sign.

“Honk if you love Miss Alice,” read another – and many drivers did.

In her retirement, Miss Alice is looking forward to learning how to decorate cakes.
